Cuando un niño o adolescente roba, los padres naturalmente se preocupan. Ellos se preocupan por las causas del comportamiento del niño y se preguntan si su hijo o hija es un "delincuente." Es normal que un niño pequeño tome algo que exite su interés o que le llame la atención.
Esto no se puede considerar como robo hasta que el niño sea suficientemente mayor, generalmente de tres a cinco años, y pueda entender acerca de que las cosas pertenecen a una persona en particular.
Los padres tienen que educar de forma activa a sus niños acerca de los derechos a la propiedad y la consideración hacia los demás. Aunque hayan aprendido que el robar es malo, los niños mayores y los adolescentes roban por varias razones.
Un joven puede robar para tener cosas iguales a las de su hermano o hermana, quien aparentemente es favorecido con regalos y cariño. Algunas veces, un niño puede robar como muestra de valentía ante sus amigos, o para hacerles regalos y así aumentar su popularidad en la escuela.
Los padres deben de preguntarse si es que el niño ha robado por la necesidad de recibir mayor atención. En tales casos, el niño puede estar expresando ira o tratando de "cobrárselas" con sus padres, y el objeto robado se convierte en un substituto del afecto.
Los padres deben de hacer un esfuerzo y darle más reconocimiento al niño como miembro importante de la familia. Si los padres toman las medidas adecuadas, en la mayoría de los casos el robo cesa según el niño va creciendo.
Los psiquiatras de niños y adolescentes recomiendan que cuando los padres se den cuenta de que su niño ha robado, ellos:
* Ayuden al adolescente a pagar o a devolver el objeto robado
* Le digan al niño que robar es malo
* Se aseguren de que el niño no se beneficie del robo bajo ninguna circunstancia
* Eviten sermonearle, pronosticar el mal comportamiento futuro, o el decir que ahora se le considera al niño un ladrón.
* Hacerle claro que su comportamiento es totalmente inaceptable dentro de las costumbres familiares y de la comunidad.
Cuando el niño ha pagado o ha devuelto la mercancía robada, los padres no deben de traer de nuevo el caso, de manera que el niño pueda comenzar "en limpio" otra vez. Si el niño roba persistentemente y los robos continúan a pesar de haberse tomado estas medidas, el robar probablemente es el resultado de un problema mayor en el desarrollo emocional del niño.
Los niños que roban repetidamente tienen dificultad para confiar en los demás y para establecer buenas relaciones con otros. En vez de sentirse culpables, ellos culpan a otras personas por su comportamiento y le echan la culpa a los demás alegando que, "ya que ellos se niegan a darme lo que necesito, yo lo cojo".
Algunos niños roban por el temor a una dependencia; ellos desean no tener que depender de nadie, de manera que roban lo que necesitan. Al tratar a un niño que roba persistentemente, el psiquiatra de niños y adolescentes diagnosticará las razones reales por las cuales el niño tiene una necesidad de robar y planificará un programa de tratamiento.
Algunos aspectos importantes del tratamiento son el ayudar al niño a aprender a establecer una relación de confianza, y el ayudar a la familia para que apoye al niño en una trayectoria positiva de desarrollo.
